When I was seven months pregnant, I discovered that my husband was cheating on me. I was absolutely devastated, and my first instinct was to file for divorce immediately. But then my father came to talk to me. He said: “You should stay with your husband for the sake of your child. I also cheated on your mother when she was pregnant. It’s just male physiology, it doesn’t mean anything.”
I was shocked, of course. I never imagined my father could do that. But after thinking about it, I decided to stay, not because I forgave my husband, but because I wanted to focus on my child. I told myself we’ll see what happens next. A few months later, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy. My father came to the hospital, took my hand, and said, “It’s time for you to know the truth. Your husband is the most disgusting person on the face of the earth. I want you to divorce him now. We will help you take care of the baby.”
I was stunned and asked her: “But you said that you cheated on my mother and that I should stay?” He sighed and said, “I never cheated on your mother. I lied because I didn’t want you to go through all that stress during your pregnancy. I just wanted you and your baby to be safe. Now that you’re okay, we can deal with your husband properly.” I still don’t know how to feel about it. But that lie, as strange and confusing as it was, was probably the kindest thing anyone had ever done for me.
