A London woman was fined £150 because she spilled a little coffee down a drain before boarding the bus.
Reasons for the fine?
A woman in London has been fined for spilling some of her coffee down a storm drain before boarding a bus, according to reports.
Burcu Yecelyurt made the split-second choice to empty “quite a bit” of coffee from her reusable coffee cup down the drain rather than risk spilling it on her bus to work in southwest London on October 10. BBC reported.

As soon as a drop of coffee dripped, three officers immediately swarmed Yesilurt at the bus station and fined them £150 – or roughly $200 – under Section 33 of the Environment Protection Act 1990, which makes it illegal to dump waste in a way that could pollute land or water, including pouring liquids into street drains.
“As soon as I turned around, I noticed three men, enforcement officers, chasing me, and they immediately stopped me,” she told the outlet.
Confronting law enforcement over such a simple and reassuring move left Yesiliurt feeling “shaken.”
“It was a huge shock,” she said.
She saw no signs in the area indicating she was not allowed to throw anything down the drain, and officers told her she should have poured her morning beverage into a nearby trash can.

“It feels very unfair. I think the fine is heavy. It’s disproportionate,” Yesiliurt said.
After reports of the incident spread across social media – with users dismissing the “ridiculous” fine – local officials decided to drop the ticket on Wednesday.
The Richmond Council overturned the fine, declaring that it was “likely” that Yesiliort’s appeal would be approved anyway, the newspaper reported.
The council still maintains that the law enforcement response was “justified.”
“I am very glad that the council recognized the sensitivity of this situation and reconsidered it,” Yesiliurt said.
“I haven’t met anyone who knows it’s a criminal offense,” she added.
