A state of emergency has been declared on a cruise ship after a passenger “fell overboard”, one tourist claims.
Passengers on board the Norwegian Jewel — currently en route from Barcelona to Miami — say they were awakened at 2 a.m. by the sound of an “Oscar starboard symbol” blaring from speakers — a maritime emergency signal for someone at sea.
A passenger claims that the cruise crew has confirmed that someone has “gone overboard” and that the cruise ship is in “search and rescue mode” – currently circling the Atlantic Ocean.
The Norwegian cruise ship sailed from Barcelona on October 15.
A British passenger, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “I was sleeping in the cabin. The captain made an announcement with the words ‘Oscar symbol to the right’.
“He was taken to our rooms as well. I thought it might be dangerous and Googled it to find that Oscar means ‘the one outside.’
“We received an announcement in the last 10 minutes confirming that there was someone at sea, which is why we were and are still flying.”
Norwegian Cruise Line has been contacted for comment.
