Alabama bonfire shooting suspect now charged with murder after death

Suspect in Alabama bonfire shooting that injured three and killed one cheerleader. Accused of murder.

Kimber Mills, 18, was shot and killed in the early hours of October 19 Pinson, Alabama, on fire, officials said. The shooting took place in an area known locally as The Pit. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said SuspectSteven Tyler Whitehead, 27, arrived around 12:24 a.m. and discharged his gun several times after a verbal and physical altercation.

Whitehead was initially charged with three counts of attempted murder, but prosecutors filed a murder charge after Mills’ death.

Ashley Mills, the victim’s sister, shared on Facebook that Kimber died Wednesday night. Kimber was a senior at Cleveland High School, where she ran track and was also a cheerleader.

“Our sweet baby sister went to be with the Lord last night at 7:08! She had the biggest gathering for a doctor’s honor walk ever! She was and is loved by so many. We will miss you Kimber! Everyone feel free to share this post wherever they feel needed!” Ashley Mills wrote on Facebook.

Ashley Mills said AL.com Kimber was “caught in the crossfire” when she was shot.

Silas McKay, 21, said WBRC The suspect tried to talk to Kimber before the fight started.

“My ex-girlfriend came up to me at the party and said he was trying to do something with this girl named Kimber,” McKay said. “My friend and I found him, and we started fighting him. I grabbed him and put him over my shoulder and put him on the ground. My friend pulled me off him and that’s when he pulled out his gun and started shooting.”

Kimber Mills had Plans to attend the University of Alabama in 2026 and hoped to become a nurse.

A walk of honor was held on Tuesday afternoon after doctors determined that her injuries were too serious and her heart was donated to the 7-year-old. WVTM. Authorities said she was shot in the head and leg and a private car took her to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

Riley Sirbo, who knew Kimber Mills, told Fox News Digital: “I want her to be known for her sunny personality and big smile rather than her tragedy.”

“I’m thankful for all the happiness she’s brought to my other friends,” she said. “She seemed like a very bright light in many lives.”
