Christmas Island red crabs begin their annual migration

Millions of crabs have begun their annual migration to Christmas Island, turning the streets and trees into a carpet of red.
The island, located off the Australian mainland and close to the Indonesian island of Java, experiences a spectacular event every summer, when about 50 million of them descend from their homes on the beaches below to lay their eggs.
Special crab bridges have been built on the island to help the crabs cross difficult obstacles such as roads, and local radio stations give the public updates on their movements.
The migration will culminate in a major spawning event in mid-November, followed by another spawning a month later, according to Parks Australia, with the young crabs returning to shore in the New Year.
