The man accused of killing Irina Zarutska faces federal charges that could result death penaltyAccording to new reports.

DeCarlos Brown Jr., 34, accused of fatally stabbing a Ukrainian woman on a Charlotte light rail train, has been indicted by a federal grand jury. ABC News.

On Wednesday, a jury indicted Brown on charges of violence against a railroad carrier and public transportation system resulting in death, a felony under federal law.

The charges stem from the Aug. 22 slaying of 23-year-old Zarutska in what authorities described as an unprovoked attack on the Lynx Blue Line light rail.

According to prosecutors and court documents, surveillance video shows Zarutska entering the train car and sitting in front of Brown.

About four minutes later, Brown allegedly pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed her three times in the back.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by the outlet, there was no prior communication between the two prior to the attack.

After the stabbing, Brown allegedly drove away while other passengers called for help.

Zarutska was pronounced dead at the scene, and responding officers arrested Brown minutes later Light rail platform.

A pocket knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was also recovered from nearby.

The North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections shows Brown has a prior criminal history, including convictions for burglary, breaking and entering and armed robbery.

Since 2015, he has served five years in jail.
