Don Mattingly is on the cusp of getting his long-awaited World Series ring

Perhaps the death of the Yankees’ stupid, decades-long hair policy is a bad omen because everything is going Don Mattingly’s way this year.

Mattingly, who the Yankees ridiculously benched him in 1991 because of his long hair, is having a great season. If Mattingly’s Blue Jays can pull off an upset over the old Dodgers, it will complete what has been a perfect baseball year for Mattingly, 44 years after he debuted as a surprise Yankee star.

Mattingly, the Jays’ coach and frequent confidant of John Schneider, helped the Jays dominate the Yankees in the Division Series, eliminating the team for which Mattingly starred for 14 years and coached for four. Then Mattingly’s Jays took down the Mariners in a seven-game ALCS thriller.

Now, Mattingly’s team has a chance against the Dodgers, as he served as the starting manager of Guggenheim’s current regime and reached his first Major League Championship Series in 2013 before leaving Los Angeles for the Marlins two years later, to be replaced by current Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts.
