Ernie Clement’s blunder cost the Blue Jays early in World Series Game 1

Ernie Clement killed a potential run for the Blue Jays in Game 1 of the World Series.

With two outs in the second inning on Friday night, Toronto designated hitter George Springer hit a ground ball on a pitch and was able to reach base safely as Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman attempted to throw to second before throwing the ball to pitcher Blake Snell, who was covering the bag at first.

Clement, running from first to second, tried to take third base when Snell wasn’t looking, but was eventually thrown out to end the inning.

“The ball is being thrown all over the diamond,” play-by-play commentator Joe Davis said on the Fox broadcast. “First, Freeman looks to second, then he goes to first, and then (the ball) comes back across the diamond. For a moment there, it looks like a high-profile Little League game.”

During the play, Clement appeared to stop running after touching second base before starting again at third.

The Dodgers took an early lead over the Blue Jays as left fielder Enrique Hernandez hit an RBI single and Teoscar Hernandez scored in the second inning.

Los Angeles scored again in the third inning when catcher Will Smith singled to right field and Mookie Betts scored from second base.

The Blue Jays ended up tying the game on a fourth-inning homer from center fielder Daulton Varsho.

toronto Got a much needed boost to her lineup for the World Series, with star center fielder Bo Bichette finally returning from injury for the first game.

Bichette, 27, played second base in Friday’s game, a position he has not played since entering the major leagues in 2019.

“I think every part of this is a challenge, but I think it would be even if I was playing,” Bichette told reporters on Friday. “The World Series is a different tournament. Fortunately, I’ve spent a lot of time in my life at second base, so I have some experience there.

“I mean I feel like I’m ready to contribute there.”
