Ethiopian asylum seeker mistakenly freed in UK after sexual assault allegations

Britain’s immigration system Authorities confirmed an Ethiopian asylum seeker who sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl and another woman was accidentally released from prison Friday, sparking a manhunt for a fugitive sex offender.
Hadush Gerbersalasi Kebatu, 38, was sentenced to 12 months in prison in September, Reuters Reported.
According to The Associated Press, “shocked” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned Kebtoo’s publication as “totally unacceptable”.
His arrest in July sparked weeks of protests outside The Bell Hotel in EppingA migrant housing site about 20 miles north of London, according to reports.
At its peak in 2023, the Home Secretary said more than 400 hotels were being used to house asylum seekers, costing around £9 million GBP or roughly $11.3 million per day.

“We share the view of communities across the country that these hotels should close – including the Bell Hotel in Epping,” UK Foreign Secretary and Labor MP Yvette Cooper wrote in a previous statement. “We are moving to do this as quickly as possible through a structured and sustainable plan, rather than court decisions that create more problems for other local areas or councils.
“Such piecemeal decisions risk a repeat of the chaos that leads to massive overuse of hotels.”

David Lammy, Britain’s Secretary of State for Justice, wrote in an X-Post that he was “appalled by the accidental release at HMP Chelmsford.”
“We are working urgently with the police to trace him and I have ordered an immediate investigation,” Lammy wrote. “Kebutu should be deported for his crimes, not our streets.”
Kimmy Badenoch, Conservative Member of Parliament for North West Essex, also made a fiery post, “The whole system is collapsing under the workers.”
“Fake asylum seeker ‘wrongfully released’ after sexually assaulting child in Epping,” Badenoch wrote. “How does that happen? Because the whole system is collapsing under labor. The government is mistakenly letting people out instead of deporting them. Those they deported are coming back. Nothing is being done to threaten the women and girls living in these communities.”

Badenoch said the Conservatives voted against Labour’s prisoner release program because it was “putting predators back on our streets,” but Kebtu had just been convicted.
“A level of incompetence that beggars belief,” she wrote. “Only the Conservatives have a plan for stronger borders and public order.”
