
Europe joins Trump in imposing more sanctions on Russia
The European Union joined the United States in imposing more economic sanctions on Russia on Thursday, adding to recent punitive measures taken by President Trump to stifle revenues that fund it. Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
EU countries have formally adopted sanctions – including a ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas – as part of a widening campaign to force President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the war.
The EU measures largely target the Russian oil and gas sector, Russia’s shadow fleet of aging tankers, and the Russian financial sector.
Victorious Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky celebrated the new sanctions and urged more countries to punish Russia further.
“We have been waiting for this,” Zelensky said. “God bless him, it will work. This is very important.”
He added: “This is a good signal for other countries in the world to join the sanctions.”
These latest efforts come a day after the United States imposed some of its toughest economic sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies.
US Imposing sanctions on the two largest energy companies in Moscow – Rosneft and Lukoil – It came after the cancellation of the planned summit between Trump and Putin.
Trump said his plan for a quick meeting with Putin is on hold because he does not want it to be a “waste of time.”
“These are massive sanctions,” Trump said. “We hope they won’t last long, and we hope the war will be settled.”
“It’s time to stop the killing and an immediate ceasefire,” Treasury Secretary Scott Besent added, noting that the two companies help “fund the Kremlin’s war machine.”
