Exclusively | Inside ‘Stranger Things’ season 5 costume: Hopper, Dustin and more

Amy Paris, who designed the “Stranger Things” costumes for the final three seasons of the hit show, dresses the main characters according to “the emotions they’re going through.”

“Some of them have very specific colors,” she exclusively told the newspaper, noting that Will (Noah Schnapp) wears “tan, blue, and red that has been in pretty much every season.”

Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) wears “a lot of burgundy and maroon,” while Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) is “always nice and bright,” but is quieter in Season 5 because he’s “mourning.”

Season 5 sees Dustin mourning his friend Eddie (Joseph Quinn), who died in season 4.

She said this gave it a more sombre look with the darker colours.

“He’s got his trench coat, but now he’s wearing gray pants, and his Reebok shoes have gone from white to black. His hat is no longer a big statement with a logo. It’s black with a little bit of yellow,” Paris explained.

“We’re seeing a lot of young people, a lot of kids. So I wanted the crayon colors to really shine among the kids,” Paris said, noting that the new character, Derek Turnbow (Jake Connelly), wears a “crayon vest” with red, blue and yellow stripes.

“The primaries are really rich and saturated. And then we also balance that out with more pale, subtle, darker shades for fall and winter,” Paris explained.

“I think this helps show the audience that it’s not spring, it’s not summer. It’s a little more serious. It’s a little darker in its tone.”

Season 5 also sees Hawkins undergoing military quarantine, with commando types roaming around, wandering around the evil Inverted Dimension. Linda Hamilton’s new character, Dr. Kay, is in charge of them.

The Duffer brothers said they wanted the commandos to feel “like a mercenary militia group separate from anything the military has actually done historically,” Paris said.

“It’s a kind of militia, inside our upside down world. But it would have been cool to give them this kind of flight suit.”

“We made these black vests so they were very tactical and practical. Then they got special military patches that indicated they were part of this wolf pack,” she added.

Paris has deliberately stayed away from real military clothing because it does not want to “offend the military.”

She explained that their clothing is not based on any specific modern combat look, but rather has been “pulled together from all military forces over the decades.”

Hopper also has his own military uniform in Season 5, where he was infiltrating the Upside Down to spy on the commandos and search for Vecna.

“This uniform is supposed to look the same on everyone. Something that can be purely functional (and) battle-ready. So this was an exciting thing to do with David,” Paris explained.

In Season 5, Hopper talks about his past military experience in the Vietnam War.

“Our inspiration actually went back to his background in the military that he served in the story. He was part of the Chemical Corps.” special operations, “And this uniform actually has specific pockets and a specific placement,” Paris said.

She said they tried to replicate that look, but with a different fabric, so it would look more homemade, as if “Joyce had made a pair of pants for him.”

“It was more like a dark blue-gray fabric instead of the weird green that the Army was using. But we reversed the placement of the pockets and the exact design of the Chemical Corps uniform so it was like: ‘Okay, this is his background. “This is what he knows to wear.”

“It was great to incorporate the story of his previous background in the military, mixed with 1980s fashion,” she told the newspaper, noting that it was a “fierce battle look.”

Fortunately, Harbor was “really interested” in the end result.

“He was excited. He also wanted to make sure he was comfortable all season long. Because we’re really only seeing a few outfits this season on these characters.” “So, we got really specific about the shoes and made sure his shoes would be something he could wear for hours on end every day, for months at a time.”

Paris gave Hopper and the militia men canvas Palladium boots, “which were also popular in the 1980s, and we knew they would be more comfortable to wear throughout the entire season.”

Meanwhile, Maya Hawke has been “most vocal” about her fashion, with one of Robin’s looks inspired “by Winona Ryder and her ’80s fashions.”

The Ryder tribute — which will appear later this season — was Hawkeye’s idea.

“It was a nice nod to someone she not only admired as a human being, but was now working with as an actor,” Paris said.

Stranger Things season 5 will consist of 8 episodes, will be released on Netflix in three volumes, and will be released on November 26, December 25, and December 31.
