Freeze warnings reach 50 million in US, including tri-state area, as temperatures drop

More than 50 million Americans will be under sleet and freeze warnings, authorities said, as bone-chilling temperatures are expected to blanket the central and eastern United States by Friday morning.

Sleet and freeze advisories, which could cause temperatures to dip into the 20s in some areas, will extend from southern Minnesota to central New Jersey, FOX meteorologist Dylan DeBruin told The Post.

“Frost and freeze alerts have been posted for more than 50 million Americans, who could see freezing conditions Friday morning,” DeBruin said.

“The strong cold front is allowing cold Canadian air to filter in behind it. Temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees below average and could drop below freezing until Friday morning,” DeBruyn said.

“A drop below freezing, combined with calm winds and clear skies, will allow frost to develop,” he added.

Freeze warnings have been put in place as temperatures in nine New Jersey counties — including western Monmouth, Mercer, Salem, Gloucester, Burlington, Ocean, Cumberland and Atlantic counties — will drop into the mid-upper 30s Friday morning. NJ.com reported.

Low temperatures often signal the end of the growing season, when frost and freezing conditions can kill or damage crops and plants.

The Big Apple will be exempt from any warnings, but New Yorkers can expect cold temperatures through the end of the week.

“Although New York City is not on any alerts, lows on Friday and Saturday morning will be in the mid 40s,” DeBruin added.

The first frost in New York City usually occurs in mid-November, according to weather experts.
