General Motors is removing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from all of its future vehicles, and it’s already driving motorists crazy.

The surprise announcement was made earlier this week by CEO Mary Barra, who claimed that the company will be phasing out the popular systems from its entire fleet of electric and gas vehicles over the next few years.

It will be replaced by GM’s own built-in interface, powered by Google’s Android Automotive operating system, Barra argues. Interview with The Edge It will allow for a “smoother, more secure, and more unified user experience.”

GM has already begun rolling out its own system in some of its electric vehicles, but it currently continues to offer CarPlay and Android Auto in 34 out of 40 models across its brands, per Newsweek.

according to Autoblog“GM’s long-term goal is to transition its vehicles to ‘software-defined platforms,’ unlocking revenue from subscriptions and in-car services.”

Many motorists took to social media to express their anger at this announcement, with some saying it was nothing more than a money grab by the car company.

“Another stupid decision by an American automaker (and I own GM products)” An angry one. “No one wants GM to be captive to apps and navigation. We know it’s going to be bad and they’re going to add $2,000 on every car.”

“Here comes the subscriptions to run your car.” Another infiltration.

“You can no longer get a car without some kind of subscription being shoved down your throat.” The third X user got angry. “Remote start is no longer possible. After that, there will be no more Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. If this trend continues, both applications will be completely retired.”

However, GM isn’t the only automaker implementing its own interface.

Mercedes-Benz recently introduced its own operating system in the new CLA, while Audi also has its own interface.

According to daily mail, Ford, Toyota and Volvo are also “developing their own (independent) software systems.”

However, a GM spokesperson told this publication that Barra’s announcement shouldn’t scare off current GM owners.

“We are not making any changes to existing vehicles,” the spokesperson said. “If your car supports Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, this will continue.”
