There are those who strive to downplay the more momentous aspects of being human, and others who simply like to embrace them. If you’re one of the latter – and you’re also old enough to remember 1980s-There is a fairly good chance that you have an affinity with Garbage pail kids.

In September 2022, Abrams published Garbage Pail Kids Cookbookfilled with about thirty recipes that sound every bit as unappetizing as you’d expect. They were all “created” by the Garbage Pail Kids themselves, and designed to fit their theme. For example, Cheesy Charlie’s contributed “Snowcorn Pizza” — popcorn topped with cheese and a green-dyed mixture of tomato paste, butter and other key pizza ingredients. For Saucey Sarah’s “Sloppy Spaghetti Sliders,” you can replace the meat with spaghetti covered in sauce.

But if there was a blue ribbon for most disgusting performances, Scotty’s Booty would win it without a contest. His “Poop Cookies” are equal parts chocolatey and evocative, and that’s all we’ll say about that.
The book was co-written by New York-based chef and caterer Elizabeth Weinberg and her husband, music producer Matt Stein (son of R.L., who wrote the cookbook’s foreword). Given Weinberg’s culinary expertise, you can count on the recipes to taste delicious—although Joe Simcoe’s illustrations might make you think otherwise.
