On the morning of my birthday, it all came crashing down. My stepson woke up with a high fever. His father was away, so I tried calling his mother several times, leaving messages and voice notes. nothing. No response at all.
I didn’t want to ruin my birthday, but I also didn’t know what to do with my stepson. I gave him his medication, checked his temperature, made sure he was getting water, and put on a movie to get him comfortable. He told me he would be fine for a few hours and that I should go enjoy my party.
