I Refuse to Stay Late at Work—HR’s Response Shocked Everyone / Bright Side

Hello The bright side,

I was written to leave at 5:30 – which is literally the expiration time of my contract. My manager summoned me to her office, and she seemed upset and said: “Everyone stays until at least seven. It shows commitment.”

I looked at her calmly and said, “That’s not in my contract. My work hours are from 9 to 5:30.” She rolled her eyes and replied, “Well, doing the bare minimum won’t get you any further here.”

I left that meeting frustrated but decided to go for it Exactly what my contract saidno more. So I left at 5:30 every day after that.

A month later, HR called me. I walked in and saw my manager You look smugIt’s like she caught me doing something wrong.

But then HR said, “We’ve reviewed the schedules. Your writing to leave on time goes against company policy and your contract. We need to know what’s going on here.”

Show another The employees have complained About being pressured to work overtime for free, and my writing was proof of that. The lawyer has looked into everything.

My manager’s face turned red as HR said she would need to be retrained and that no one could work after hours without approval and overtime pay.

Now everything is different. Some of my coworkers thanked me quietly, but others were cold, like I’d messed things up. My boss barely talks to me and is clearly still angry.

I don’t regret standing up for myself, but I’m worried about what will happen next. Did you do the right thing? How do I deal with this now?

please help,
whatever
