I Refused to Go to Work After a Family Emergency—HR Got Involved / Bright Side

Hello The bright side,

I went to my boss Urgently Ask 5 days off.

The night before, my 17-year-old son was in a terrible car accident. He is now in the intensive care unit In critical condition.

But my boss refused. He said it had been a busy week, we had projects to present to three different clients, and I had presentations to prepare for. He told me, “Sorry, but I can’t give you a week’s vacation on such short notice. You need to separate work and personal life.”

I just smiled and showed up for work the next morning.

When I arrived I was carrying Huge bouquet of flowers. I told my manager that it was sent by one of our clients as a “get well soon” gift for my son. He was confused and asked how the customer knew about the incident.

What he didn’t know was that the day before, without telling anyone, I have sent an email to all our customers.
I made it clear that I would not be available this week due to my son’s accident.

Now, if my boss made me come to work, He would be the one who looked bad – Forcing the employee to work while his child is in the intensive care unit.

5 minutes later, HR called me and said it was unprofessional To contact customers “Behind the company’s back.”

They told me that I had put them in a difficult position, that they now had to give me vacation days and that projects would be postponed. Those missed deadlines will It costs the company extra money.

I told them “This is not my problem. I asked my manager for leave, but he refused.”

Did I do the right thing, or should I have handled it differently?

sincerely,
Linda
