I Refused to Let Mom Move In With Me—My Privacy Isn’t Up for Debate / Bright Side

Hello bright side,
My father left me an inheritance, and I (age 34) finally bought my first apartment.
Last week, my mother showed up at my door, crying with her bags in hand – and her rent had gone up; She couldn’t pay. “I bought this place for… I,“I said, ‘He booked her a hotel for tonight. ‘Your father’s money is my money too,’ she replied and left.
The next day, I froze and found an envelope in front of my door. Inside were my spare keys and a note: “You were right. You need to have your own life. I’ll handle it.”
Two days later, her friend called and said: My mother has settled in a small place in the countryside, a retirement community that she was very proud to mention before. She used the last of her savings to make a deposit.
I can’t shake the guilt of turning her away, but this is my first real home, and I just want to live like an adult — for once. Am I doing the right thing?
