I Refused to Take a Work Call on Vacation, Now HR Is After Me / Bright Side

How does rejecting a call during an approved vacation period suddenly become a problem?? I love my job, but it’s not my whole life. I’ve canceled birthdays, skipped family dinners, and stayed up late at night just to make deadlines.
But when I finally drew the line, they made me feel like I had committed some sort of crime and gave me a “warning.” There are already enough qualified people in the company who can handle the problem for me, as I do for them. But no one came forward for me.
Now I’m wondering if I should start looking for another job, a job actually Districts vacation. We are in the year 2025, not the 1990s. Work-life balance is supposed to mean something, right?
So here’s my question: Was I wrong to refuse to take an urgent work call while on vacation, or is HR completely out of line?
