To my surprise, she grabbed my arm. I froze. She laughed sarcastically and said loudly, “Don’t worry about it, my dear. I deal with cheap customers like you all the time.” My jaw dropped.
My husband immediately stood up and asked her to back off. Other people were staring. It was very insulting. We left right after that, and I was shaking in the car.
When I participated story With my friends, reactions were divided. Some said I did the right thing, that tipping is not automatic, especially when the service is bad. Others said I should have complained to the manager or at least tipped instead of declining to tip outright to avoid looking “cheap.”
I think it’s not about the money at all. It’s about attitude, bad service, and the right to a nice tip no matter what service you provide. I always leave a nice tip when the service is good.
And honestly, if that waiter thought I was a “cheap skater,” so be it. At least I know I wasn’t rewarding bad behavior. Maybe you’ll treat your next customers better.
