Aaron Glenn returns New York Jetsfranchise where he began his playing career, for his first NFL head coaching opportunity.

Jets owner Woody Johnson is backing first-year coach Aaron Glenn despite the team’s 0-7 start. However, Johnson’s faith doesn’t seem to extend to the quarterback Justin Fields.

“It looks like (Glenn) is turning some of that around,” Johnson said Tuesday at the NFL’s fall owners meetings.

At halftime of the Jets’ Week 7 loss to the Carolina Panthers, Glenn decided to bench Fields in favor of veteran signal-caller Tyrod Taylor. It remains unclear whether Fields or Taylor will be under center for the Jets’ first offensive series in the team’s Week 8 matchup. Cincinnati Bengals.

Johnson then expressed frustration with the specific statistical ratings attached to Fields.

“It’s hard to have a quarterback with the rating we’ve got. He’s got potential, but nothing spectacular. If you look at any head coach with a quarterback like that, you’ll see the same results all over the league. You’ve got to be consistent at that position, and that’s what we’re going to try to do next season.”

Fields has started six games with the Jets, missing Week 3 due to concussion protocol. He has compiled a 91.1 passer rating this season. While Johnson hinted at optimism, he was quick to admit that “you can’t win with hope,” before noting, “but it helps.”

Johnson is committed to letting the coaching staff make decisions about the quarterback position. Glenn “will make the right decision with what we have,” he added.

Johnson’s relationship with Glenn dates back nearly three decades. The billionaire businessman redoubled his faith in the Jets head coach.

“I believe in Aaron,” Johnson said. “I see how he handles the room. If I were a player, I would respond to that because it’s the real deal. No BS there, no second agenda. What you are hearing is true. Many times, players don’t understand the truth. They get a lot of gobbledygook.”

2025 NFL Trade Deadline is scheduled for November 4. The Jets could be one of the teams looking to acquire or move players as the deadline approaches. Johnson said the front office will explore all options.

“I think we’re always looking at every option,” Johnson said, “always looking for what’s going on in football.”
