Jets fans and even the team’s owner have criticized Fields all season. In fact, Fields wasn’t even guaranteed to start on the road at Pecor Stadium on Sunday, as head coach Aaron Glenn kept his decision close to his chest until Saturday.
After his redemption game, Fields revealed that the criticism and pressure to perform really got to him this week.
“I’m going to be pretty vulnerable here,” Fields told reporters, via Yahoo Sports. “This week, I found myself in my closet crying on the floor, lying down. Not because of troubles, not because of troubles. I felt like I was built to handle it… Yesterday, I was just praying over and over to get a win.”
Jets owner Woody Johnson criticizes Justin Fields, defends Aaron Glenn amid team’s turmoil
Jets owner Woody Johnson publicly criticized the play of his quarterback during the NFL’s annual fall meetings.
“It’s tough when you have a quarterback with the rating we’ve had,” Johnson said to a scrum of reporters. “He’s got potential, but not something intimate. If you look at any head coach with a quarterback like that, you’ll see similar results across the league.”

Fields clearly heard what his employer had to say, though he referred to it as “outside noise at the end of the day.”
“I understand he owns the team, but he’s an outside voice,” he added. “The biggest thing is that my teammates believed in me and my coaches still believe in me.”
Fields got his first win as a Jets player, a feeling head coach Aaron Glenn has been waiting for for seven weeks. Glenn also held nothing back in getting to know the Jets Bengal‘ defense on its heels and continued two-point conversions on back-to-back touchdown drives in the fourth quarter.
Without either succeeding, we might still be talking about a Jets team that won on Monday.
But not so. Instead, the Jets have “Winning Monday” and hope to extend their winning streak as they now head into their bye week. They will be at home on November 9th against the Cleveland Browns, another struggling team.

“It’s a lot for me emotionally, spiritually,” Fields said. “When I was on the field, I started to cry, not because we won, but because of the goodness of God. Everything I’ve been through this past week, everything we’ve been through as a team in these seven weeks, it’s been a lot of ups and downs, and I’ve had a lot of support from my teammates, from my brothers, from my friends, I’m thankful for my family. Praying, praying like crazy, just for the win.”
Fields went 21-for-32 for 244 yards with a touchdown pass to receiver Tyler Johnson before the end of the first half. Hall added 133 rushing yards on 18 carries with his two scores, while also throwing a touchdown to Mason Taylor.
