“Like getting in the ring with Mike Tyson.”
Andrew Cuomo torched his mayoral rival Zahran Mamdani As a rich kid he tried to “play politics” – and tried to lure an audience to influential boxer Logan Paul’s podcast by dropping a Mike Tyson reference.
The 34-year-old Queens councilman who leads the City Council would be “like stepping into the ring with Mike Tyson when he was young, and you’ve never boxed before — but you’ll find out along the way,” the former governor said on an “Impaulsive Podcast” episode. Released Tuesday.
“This is New York City. You have to know what you’re doing. There’s a level of qualifications,” Cuomo, 67, told YouTube, who is also a professional wrestler and part-time boxer.
“Just think about it – it’s life or death. If you don’t make the right decision, people die,” he said.
Cuomo, who is running as an independent, ripped the Democratic nominee — who would be the second-youngest mayor in New York City history if elected — as someone who “has never managed more than five people. And has never had a real job.”
“He comes from wealth. His mother is a very successful filmmaker. He grew up in Uganda, in a mansion in Uganda basically, and moved to Manhattan. He grew up in a penthouse on the West Side. He went to a private school, $60,000 a year, Bowden College,” he said in the podcast recorded last week.
“He’s a child of wealth. He’s never had to work. He’s never worked. He’s never had a real job and he’s been in politics and he ran for the state Assembly and won,” Cuomo said, before criticizing Mamdani, saying he Only “three bills” were passed And “Worst attendance record In the New York State Assembly.”
The three-time Democratic governor — who resigned in 2021 in the face of sexual misconduct allegations he denies — also criticized the leftist front-runner for his brief, ambitious rap career, while noting that his impressive campaign videos helped him surge in the polls.
“He was a rapper, he had a very good social media presence, he captured the imagination. He was great on TikTok. He connected with the younger generation,” said Cuomo, who was defeated by Mamdani in the Democratic primary in June.
He added of Mamdani’s policy proposals: “He has resorted to very simplistic solutions that will never work.”
“This trick works in politics. Especially now. A lot of people don’t get to the bottom of it,” Cuomo said.
But even as he described Mamdani as a “rich son” with a privileged upbringing, Cuomo — the son of former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo — also touted his powerful family legacy that helped fuel his political rise.
Reflecting on his record, he said: “I’m a Democrat. My father was a Democrat. I worked for Bill Clinton. I’m a lifelong Democrat.”
The podcast also veered into high-profile family lore, with Paul noting that Cuomo’s life was “crazy.”
The longtime president agreed, bragging about his brother Chase Cuomo’s former TV show, “Cuomo Prime Time,” which aired on CNN from 2017 to 2021.
“Yes, we’ve lived a crazy life. Ups and downs, huge highs, huge lows,” he said.
“He had the highest-rated show on CNN — or really, I had the highest-rated show on CNN if you want to get technical, because his highest rating was when I was a guest on his show.”
