Mississippi substitute teacher Miyata Borders fired for calling high school student ‘short’ on TikTok

A substitute teacher in Mississippi was fired on her first day for calling a student “short” during a now-viral TikTok video she created while at school.

Miyata Borders, 24, was canned by DeSoto County Schools days after she claimed she had a “new zest for life” as a substitute teacher at Lake Cormorant High School. According to WREG.

Borders, who has prided herself as a “content creator,” documented her first day on the job as part of a “day in the life” video on TikTok on October 17.

“Yes, we’ve got a new activity in life, I’m a school teacher,” Borders narrated at the beginning of her video, which captured moments throughout her day.

Five hours into her concert, Borders recorded an enthusiastic pep show inside the school that included students marching down the hallway with a band and cheerleaders, one of whom apparently caught the sub’s attention.

“Damn, short, sheesh,” Borders said with a laugh. “Dude, I gotta wake up after the school kids try to knock me down.”

The controversial TikTok has been viewed more than 2.2 million times.

The comment quickly spread to school officials, who ended contact with Borders after she posted the video on her social media page.

Borders was hired by staffing firm Kelly Services and will no longer be appointed to positions within the school district.

“District officials informed Kelly Services today that this individual is no longer permitted to be a substitute teacher for DeSoto County Schools,” the school district told the outlet on Tuesday.

The self-described “gorgeous and DIY” executive claimed she was the victim after being fired.

“Honestly, it’s so sad how sick the world is that you guys just automatically misrepresent me without more context,” Borders said in a message. Follow-up video posted Thursday.

“I’m a content creator, and I record everything I do, so it was a normal thing for me,” Borders said as she sat inside the car. “If you create content, you will know that what you see is not what you get.”

The fired substitute explained that the majority of the TikTok clips were recorded while she was alone at school, along with the one clip that filmed unsuspecting students.

The rest of the video showed Borders skillfully recording students as she walked through the halls, standing at the podium and placing her feet on a desk, turning the classroom into an adorable video shoot, as she put the wrong time in, saying “12:25 a.m.”

Borders claimed that school officials knew she was a content creator and that she was recording her day.

“I had absolutely no idea that I couldn’t enroll students, otherwise I certainly wouldn’t have done it,” she said. “I would have really registered myself if I had known there was a problem with student registration.”

Borders said she was “not a predator at all” and only made the videos for content.

She later claimed that she “literally lost it because of one mistake.”

TikTok users criticized Borders for its selfishness and blatant violation of the privacy of underage students.

“It was all inappropriate and unprofessional,” one comment read.

“Oh, you thought the school was aesthetic!” Another reading.

A third said: “I wouldn’t even trust you to look at a picture of my kids.”

“Well at least you made history… you were hired and fired on the same day,” one ruthless commenter wrote.

DeSoto County Schools has faced several controversies in recent months over the actions of its employees.

Several parents refused to send their children to classes earlier in the week in protest of board and faculty members’ support for a convicted sex offender.
