
More than 850 public figures and AI experts urge ban on ‘superintelligence’

A group of prominent figures, including artificial intelligence and technology experts, has called for an end to efforts to create ‘superintelligence’ – a form of AI that would surpass humans in essentially all cognitive tasks.
More than 850 people, including Virgin Group founder Richard Branson and tech leaders apple Signed by cofounder Steve Wozniak statement Wednesday published calls for a pause in the development of superintelligence.
Prominent AI pioneers along with computer scientists notably topped the list of signatories. Joshua Bengio And Geoff Hintonwho are considered the “godfathers” of modern AI. Leading AI researchers like UC Berkeley’s Stuart Russell Also signed on.
Superintelligence has become a buzzword in the AI world, as companies from Elon Musk’s xAI to Sam Altman’s OpenAI compete to release more advanced big language models. Meta has gone so far as to name its LLM department ‘Meta Superintelligence Labs’.
But signatories to a recent statement warn that the prospect of superintelligence has “raised concerns about human economic obsolescence and weakness, from loss of freedom, civil liberties, dignity and control, to national security threats and even possible human extinction.”
The statement calls for a ban on superintelligence development until there is strong public buy-in and broad scientific consensus on safety and controllability.
In addition to AI and tech figures, the names behind the statement came from a broad coalition of academics, media personalities, religious leaders and a bipartisan group of former US politicians and officials.
Those retired officials include former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen and former national security adviser Susan Rice.
Meanwhile, Steve Bannon and Glenn Beck – influential media allies of US President Donald Trump – also featured prominently on the list.
Other high-profile signatories included British royals Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle. As of Wednesday, the list was still growing.
