Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would pause his province’s anti-tariff advertising campaign in the U.S. after President Donald Trump prompted an end to trade talks.
Ford said he made the decision after speaking with Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday and that the TV spot would be paused on Monday “so trade talks can resume”.
It will still run on weekends on US networks, he said, along with Major League Baseball World Series games.
Carney told reporters on Friday that Canada is ready to resume trade talks with the U.S. “when the U.S. is ready.”
In a Truth Social post late Thursday night, Trump criticized the ad, calling it “fake” and “overwhelming.” He said the trade talks “are hereby concluded”.
The ad, sponsored by the Ontario government, quotes former US President Ronald Reagan, a Republican and icon of US conservatism, saying the tariffs “hurt every American”.
