For decades, assessing the condition of dirty diapers consisted of performing a sniff test and/or weighing the baby in his or her arms to determine if there was some fluid redistribution. Now, Pampers has announced the inevitable: It has created a new smart diaper that can alert caregivers that their little one needs changing via a smartphone notification.
The smart diaper, called Lumi, was… sophisticated Coordinated by Verily, a Google company. The system consists of a diaper with a hydration strip, two reusable activity sensors, and an attached camera that can be used to monitor baby’s sleep patterns. The egg-shaped sensor is attached to the outside of the diaper and monitors the strip for wetness. As soon as the child makes a mess of things, the sensor sends a notification to the Lumi app. Parents can then choose to change the diaper or have someone else do it.
Sensors, camera, and app are part of the starter package. Users will too needs To buy Lumi’s improved Swaddler diaper, which comes with a clearer wetness strip so the sensor can properly assess soiling.
In addition to monitoring immediate diaper concerns, the Lumi app uses Logitech’s camera to chart sleep and wake times and room temperature. Along with information about bottles and bathroom breaks, parents can get a broader perspective on their child’s habits. (For example, a bottle at 3pm may result in a permanent diaper mess at 4pm)
Lumi diapers are expected to be released in the fall and will be compatible with babies up to one year old.
