Rangers fall to Sharks in overtime to remain winless at MSG

In a confrontation between two teams desperate to win, Rangers failed to achieve victory.
The winless Sharks entered Madison Square Garden on Thursday night with their first win of the season, 6-5 in overtime, against the Blueshirts, who have yet to effectively defend home ice once this season in the world’s most famous arena.
After Will Smith scored 1:37 into the extra period, the Rangers fell to 0-4-1 at MSG.
Each team had a player score a hat-trick in the high-scoring battle.
MacLean Celebrini scored three of the Sharks’ first four goals, while Taylor Raddish was the first to put the Rangers on the board before scoring two more to help his side force overtime and earn at least a point.
This was the second hat-trick of Radic’s career.
For a team looking to prove itself at home, Rangers didn’t offer much at the start of the game.
Not only were the Sharks able to get on the board in less than two minutes, they outrebounded and outrebounded the Rangers within the first 20 minutes.
Adam Gaudet was left alone in front of the Rangers net for an easy 1-0 lead before the Sharks capitalized on a power play less than five minutes later.
The rebound found its way into the back of the Rangers net off Celebrini for his first play of the night.
After Radich cut the Sharks’ lead in half, the 19-year-old Celebrini scored his second goal of the period with roughly nine seconds left.
Will Cuylle was unable to break the ball out of the box, allowing the Sharks to put it back for a two-goal lead.
The Rangers tightened up in the second half and finally found some juice offensively. That led to three straight goals for the home team, including a power-play score from Mika Zibanejad and a go-ahead goal from Radich.
Juuso Parssinen was the one to make it 3-3 after a crafty move on Sharks goalkeeper Alex Nedeljkovic.
However, the Sharks’ rising star struck again at the end of the period. Celebrini fired a shot from the circle, showcasing his quick release, to seal the hat-trick and even the game at four goals.
According to Sportsnet, Celebrini is the 15th teenager in NHL history to score multiple hat tricks.
