Sarkozy jailed ‘big moment’ for France

Nicolas Sarkozy has become the first former French president to go to prison after serving a five-year sentence for conspiring to fund his election campaign by late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Sarkozy, who was president from 2007-2012, has appealed against his imprisonment at La Sante prison, where he will occupy a small cell in the prison’s isolation wing.

The BBC’s Paris correspondent Hugh Schofield described his imprisonment as “a big moment” for France.
