Suspects have been arrested in the theft of the Crown Jewels from the Louvre Museum in Paris, and one of them was arrested at Charles de Gaulle Airport on Saturday evening, according to the Paris prosecutor.
Paris Public Prosecutor Laure Picoau confirmed the arrests in a statement. She also condemned the leak of information in the case, which she said forced authorities to reveal facts prematurely, which she claimed could hamper the work of more than 100 investigators who were arrested. "They were mobilized to recover the stolen jewelery and arrest all the culprits".
The daring robbery that took place during the day at the museum last Sunday stunned France, when four men dressed as workers broke into the upstairs window using a ladder on a moving truck. They cut glass boxes with an electric saw and stole royal jewelry worth more than $100 million from the reign of Emperor Napoleon III in the 19th century.
According to Le Parisien newspaper, the arrested men are from the suburbs of Paris. One of them was preparing to board a plane from Charles de Gaulle Airport with some stolen pieces from the Louvre Museum. Another suspect was arrested later in the evening in the northern Paris suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez praised "Detectives who worked tirelessly, just as I asked them to, and who always had my complete trust."
