After Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier and Damon Jones After Thursday’s arrests, one of the most prominent figures in sports gambling said more arrests were likely.

Art Schlichter, fourth overall pick 1982 NFL Draft whose career was derailed by gambling addiction, predicted in a recent appearance with Outkick that “probably a lot of players” are involved in sports gambling incidents and that Thursday’s charges could be “the start of something big.”

“I think you’ll find that probably a lot of players have done it. More so in college, because that’s not the money NBA players make,” Schlichter told the OutKick host. Dan Duckich.

“When I see small colleges, small universities, with players behind the game for just a few hundred dollars, it shows how widespread it can be. Before it’s all over, I think it will blow up,

“I think a lot of players are shaking with that worry right now.”

Still, Schlichter was “puzzled” why Billups or any professional would find themselves in this position.

“I don’t understand it. These guys are making millions and millions of dollars. I don’t know why they would risk their careers to do that. I don’t know if they’re addicted, or if they think they’re better than the law or the NBA or whatever. I’m shocked they would take that risk. Especially the pro guys,” he said.

Schlichter stared Ohio StateWhere he became addicted to gambling. Throughout his adult life, Schlichter has been in and out of legal trouble with gambling and drugs. He served 10 years in prison from 2011 to 2021 on gambling-related theft and public indecency charges and admitted he stole approximately $1.5 million in gaming expenses and loans.

Billups, Rosier and Jones, the latter of whom is a defendant in both cases, are charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The NBA announced that Billups and Rozier had been placed on immediate leave from their team, “and we will continue to cooperate with the appropriate authorities.”
