DALLAS — Victor Wimbanyama scored 40 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a remarkable comeback, helping the San Antonio Spurs upset No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg for the first time in a 125-92 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.
Flagg, the second-youngest player to make his NBA debut two days behind LeBron James, did not score until the first possession of the second half, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The 18-year-old from Duke had a harder time getting into the flow than the second overall pick.
Dylan Harper came off the San Antonio bench midway through the first quarter, starting the run that put the Spurs ahead and scoring 15 points.
Stephon Castle, who won the Rookie of the Year award, scored 22 points for the Spurs.
Anthony Davis scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Mavericks awaited the return of star guard Kyrie Irving, who is likely months away from making his first appearance this season while recovering from anterior cruciate ligament surgery.
Wembanyama dominated the matchup between two of the three most recent draft picks, with the 2023 No. 1 pick adding three blocks to several stunning dunks and two buckets with fouls that sent Davis and Dereck Lively II to the bench.
The 7-foot-4 wide receiver was playing in the regular season for the first time since deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot condition in the shoulder, required surgery and he ended his sophomore season in February.
Wembanyama went on a 13-0 run late in the first half to put Spurs ahead.
After Harper scored, the 2024 Rookie of the Year pump faked a double team and was fouled by Davis en route to a reverse dunk.
The next time, he hit a jumper while Davis picked up his fourth foul.
