‘The View’s Sunny’ host says she warned local police her son would be training for the Junior Olympics in an ‘all-white neighborhood’: ‘Black boys aren’t given the presumption of innocence’

The film examines the consequences of Florida’s “stand your ground” laws in the wake of the murder of Ajek Owens, a 35-year-old mother who was shot and killed by her neighbor, a white woman named Susan Lorinsch, who spent years harassing neighborhood children and calling the cops. At the time of the tragedy, Owens went to Lorench’s door to retrieve her son’s tablet, which he claimed Lorench had stolen, only for Lorench to shoot her through a metal door.
In this morning’s episode of view, Sunny Hostin She shared her perspective as a Black mother herself.
“What I found really hurtful was that there was a black mother whose children were constantly targeted by a white woman. This was a racial bias crime,” she said, noting that although the children targeted by Lorinsch were of all races, she had a “special problem with these black children.”
“As a mother of black children, I know that black boys are not given the presumption of innocence and the presumption of youth,” she continued. “She calls the police and says they’re trying to steal her car and that they’re 11 years old. They don’t know how to drive.”
According to Hostin, she had to alert local law enforcement that her son was in a white neighborhood to avoid any similar tragedies.
“I had to be in the situation that made me go to the local police department, because I know my son is going to be training for the Junior Olympics that are happening around the block in an all-white neighborhood,” she explained. “I brought him to the police and said, ‘He’s mine. This is my son. Don’t harass him. Don’t stop him.'”
“(Owens) was doing what a lot of black mothers do, and she was killed because she was protecting her child,” Hostin added.
