Trump expects a “successful deal” with China before Xi’s summit

TOKYO — President Trump predicted a “successful deal” ahead of his meeting Thursday with Chinese President Xi Jinping — after negotiators from both countries drafted a framework for a trade agreement to avert Trump’s threats. Additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods.
“I believe we will make a successful deal for both countries,” Trump, 79, told reporters as he headed to Japan on the second leg of his three-nation Asian tour, which will conclude in South Korea with Xi’s summit meeting.
Trump said that the final details are subject to change, and I do not want to tell you what the understanding is, because what we understood yesterday, two days ago, or even today will not necessarily be what it will be two days later.
Trump briefed reporters in the press cabin of Air Force One with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamison Greer standing nearby.
Besant told reporters that the initial framework addresses key areas of disagreement in the relationship between the United States and China, including new export restrictions imposed by Beijing on products made from rare earths and critical minerals, which prompted Trump to threaten to increase tariffs on Chinese exports.
“We have a framework for President Trump and President Xi to decide on,” Besant said. “We have discussed a wide range of things from tariffs to trade, fentanyl, purchasing large amounts of American agricultural products and rare earths.”
“We feel good,” Trump said jokingly, in an apparent reference to a reporter. “I feel good because this guy has nice, broad shoulders. And if the plane makes a big turn or something, I grab his shoulder.”
Trump said he was finalizing the China deal To rent Tiktok algorithm By a consortium of primarily US investors may also happen on Thursday.
“We have received original approval from President Xi,” Trump said. “I expect we will get approval, but I would rather wait a few days to let you know.”
Trump said a Post reporter Thursday that “the first question I’ll ask (Xi) is fentanyl,” which has killed nearly 330,000 Americans over the past five years according to federal data, prompting Trump to impose a 20% tariff in February.
“(China) is now paying a 20% tariff because of fentanyl. That’s billions and billions of dollars that they’re paying. On November 1, the tariff on China is 157%, which is record territory. And we don’t want that, because it’s not sustainable for them,” Trump said.
“They make $100 million selling fentanyl in our country — $100 million. And they lose $100 billion because of the 20% tariff. So, that’s not a good business proposition.”
Trump expressed confidence on Monday about reaching a major agreement with Xi After signing four trade agreements on Sunday This was on the sidelines of the ASEAN Conference for Southeast Asian Countries in Kuala Lumpur, on the first leg of his Asian tour.
Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam will get new tariff cuts on some products in exchange for pledges to buy American goods, make investments in the United States and remove import restrictions.
While the president was formalizing these arrangements, Chinese and American negotiators were also meeting in the Malaysian capital to formulate a framework for the upcoming summit.
