UW professor: ‘I won’t be hired’ today under university’s new DEI rules

A Washington University professor attacked the college Strict Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) requirements For new hires and a faculty performance rubric that includes a scorecard measuring the DEI strategy used to evaluate the performance of prospective faculty.
Stuart Reges, UW’s Paul G. A non-tenured teaching professor in the Allen School of Computers Science and EngineeringSaid that despite his academic performance at the university, he would not have been hired under the strict DEI pledge requirements.
“To get a high rating on all of these you have to say you have a deep understanding of DEI,” Reges told Fox News Digital. “The funny thing is, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t get hired if I applied today. There’s no way I won a prestigious teaching award here at the university.”

The University of Washington’s list of associate professor of school psychology roles includes a mandatory “diversity statement” for all applicants, which demonstrates the university’s pledge of “commitment to racial equity.”
“A one-page diversity statement describing your identity, position, experience, and diversity, equity, and inclusion and alignment with APA’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Framework,” Read job postings. “In addition, describe your philosophy of teaching and learning, including how your work will advance the College of Education’s commitment to racial equity and social justice.”
Seattle Red Radio Host Jason Rantz also criticized the university’s hiring policy, saying in his recent op-ed that “this application process makes it easy to discriminate against conservatives, which is why you won’t hear far-left professors talking.”

“The university is not seeking diverse thought; it is enforcing a monotonous culture of recognized political views,” Rantz added.
In addition to the mandatory application diversity statement, professors explained that the grading rubric for evaluating a prospective professor’s performance includes a section labeled “diversity,” ranking applicants on a scale from poor to excellent.

“I know faculty, very talented professors who have quit because of that kind of pressure and people who won’t even apply,” Reges explained. “I think a lot of graduate students who want to pursue careers in teaching are saying, why bother?”

“I mean, look at the crap you have to deal with,” added Reges. “You basically have to make a statement that makes them happy by saying the things you’re going to do.”
Washington’s publicly funded university’s dedication to “challenging” itself to implement DEI policies calls into question alignment with the president. “Many corporations and universities use DEI as an excuse for biased and illegal employment practices and illegal admissions preferences, ignoring that DEI’s underlying rhetoric and ideas promote intergroup hostility and authoritarianism,” the executive order reads.

In March, the US Department of EducationUS’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) launched investigations into several universities for “racially exclusionary practices in academic programs and activities”.
The University of Washington was also included in those universities.
“The University of Washington does not view diversity and access as opposed to quality and excellence, and we are committed to providing access to excellence for all,” a university spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “Our hiring practices comply with state and federal laws to ensure that race is not a factor in hiring, and the UW has acted proactively when such violations are known to have occurred.”
“University schools, colleges and departments have considerable latitude in their hiring practices, however all must comply with state and federal laws,” the spokesperson added.
“Reference to the College of Education Search a A recent local commentator’s blog post These laws comply, but to avoid any ambiguity or misinterpretation, we are rescinding them and providing additional guidance on hiring practices before reposting them,” the spokesperson added. “We are reviewing hiring practices more broadly to ensure they comply with state and federal laws.”
