Whittaker warns he will dismantle Gavazi after pressing in
Ben Whittaker and Benjamin Gavazi both successfully pressed in today in the Friday weighing in for the battle on Saturday.
Whittaker, winner of the 2020 Olympic Silver Medal (9-0-1, 6 ko) comes into his 10-round battle against Gavazi (19-1, 13 ko) with pressure on it. The lightweight title of a blank WBC lightweight will be at stake for this battle.
It’s his first appearance with Matchroom, and the champion Eddie Hearn has already been labeled as “national” and “superstar” in the future.
Pressure
Ben Whittaker 174.8 lbs vs Benjamin Gavazi 174.5 lbs
Saturday’s Whittaker-Gavazi event will be shown live on Dazn. The main card starts at 2 pm ET / 11:00 am PT. Call walks around 4:30 pm et / 1:30 pm pt.
“I look good, don’t I?” says Whittaker confident on stage. “Trust me, it’s hard to look at this. But I’ve worked hard over in Ireland, and I’m feeling well. We know this time would come with me coming to Matchroom. Now, it’s time to hold a show.”
There are many question marks about the 28 -year -old Whittaker after the way he performed a year ago against Liam Cameron in their first match. He has been a buckle under pressure from Liam, who is a British fighter at a domestic and not world-class.
Hearn banks on Whittaker to capture a world title within five contests. The 175-lb section is already stacked with solid extinguishers, making it difficult to end the dreams of Hearn. With the right pairing, Hearn could turn it into a silver fighter even without winning a world title. That’s what he has done with Conor Benn, and he has made millions without winning a world title. Whittaker has a perfectly charming, villain-esque personality to be that kind of fighter.
“It’s good energy (by Benjamin Gavazi) – and that’s the energy you need. It’s here, and it’s ready to fight. It’s not an idiot, but I’m going to come to show why I’m the surgeon. I’m a perfectionist – I’m going to break them up,” says Whittaker.
